The environmental problems and threats affect cities and urban planning. This course defines the processes of risk construction and urban risks; describes the vulnerabilities of urban settlements against natural and technological risks; discusses risk management at global, national and local levels; analyses urban vulnerability and urban risk sectors; presents international risk management approaches and worldwide cases. Students are expected to gain an insight about risk society, risk cognition and components of risk management; disaster risk management and pre-disaster planning; basis of mitigation planning at the end of the course.
Aim
This course aims to understanding natural disasters, and their impacts on settlements; global climate change and main problems; natural resource management; integration of disaster risks into city and regional planning studies.
At the end of this course students should be able to
- analyse the relation between natural hazards and urban planning
- recognize the main issues of sustainability, resilience, mitigation and risks
- gain an integrative and inter-disciplinary approach for analysing environmental problems in a way that reflects their complexity.
